Lesson 4 of 12 · Module 4 · Match real demand
Build useful missing collections
What it is
Create a collection for a distinct shopping need with suitable maintained inventory—not for every keyword variation. 1. Collect customer questions, on-site search and available Search Console queries. Start small; expand toward 30 when useful. 2. Group phrases by shopping task. Similar wording may mean the same intent; inspect results and products before splitting. 3. Map groups to current collections. Record products, stock, margin, navigation and differences from existing pages. 4. Decide: create, improve, consolidate or defer. No universal product count or volume threshold proves a page deserves to exist. 5. Under Products > Collections, choose manual or automated membership appropriately. Automated rules need maintained attributes; verify every included product. 6. Add a concise category introduction, selection guide, listing title/description and useful links. Check supported sorting/filters and theme layout. 7. Verify live membership, mobile browsing, links and intended indexing. Plan a 30/60/90-day review—not a ranking deadline. Seasonality: compare terms together with the same country, period and filters in Google Trends. It reports sampled normalized relative interest, not monthly volume. 100 is the peak in the selected comparison, not 100 searches. Zero may mean insufficient data. Equal scores across countries do not mean equal market size.
Why it matters
Helpful resources • Free external: Google Trends and your verified property's Search Console. • Internal: Keyword Research → Trends by keyword/industry. Trends charts are country-level relative interest; other keyword metrics may be local, so check geography before applying them to nationwide ecommerce. Sign-in, selected client and confirmed applicable credits required. • Sources: Shopify collections and Trends data FAQ.

✓ Good example
A fictional store adds travel-size products to a useful collection because customers ask for small formats and size attributes are maintained.
✗ Common mistake
Creating many nearly identical collections or treating Trends 80 as 80 monthly searches.
You pass when: You have an intent-to-URL map and justified decision. Publish only a useful collection, verify membership and assign maintenance.
