Lesson 9 of 12 · Module 9 · Earn coverage

Develop ethical mentions and partnerships

What it is

Prioritize credible sources your buyers use: specialist publications, communities, reviewers and complementary partners. Authority scores are third-party diagnostics—not Google metrics or proof of relevance. 1. Research a small list; expand toward 20 when useful. Record URL, audience fit and why it might care. 2. Classify coverage as editorial, sponsored, affiliate or partner. Check mentions and factual gaps. 3. Offer verified specs, an independent-review sample, useful research or expert answers. 4. Keep pitches personalized; do not require a favorable review or backlink. Respect laws, consent and publisher policies. 5. Build partnerships with genuine value, not large-scale reciprocal link schemes. 6. Disclose sponsorship/free products/affiliate relationships as required. Google recommends rel="sponsored" for paid links; nofollow is also acceptable to qualify paid links. Attributes do not replace advertising disclosure. 7. Record follow-ups and actual outcomes: coverage, qualified referrals, measurable orders and costs. A sample guarantees nothing. 8. Stop after a declined contact; avoid unwanted repeated messages. Pitch: “Your readers ask about [need]. We can provide [verified resource] with [source/method]. If useful, I can send details. No obligation to review, cover or link.”

Why it matters

Helpful resources • Internal: Outreach for client tasks/follow-ups and Backlinks for checked data. Sign-in/client selection required; checks may cost confirmed credits. Emails open in your mail app and are never sent by the platform. • Free: private spreadsheet for publication research; do not infer visits from an authority score. • Sources: Link qualification, Spam policies.

This lesson: Publication Research.

PDF: print and write by hand. Spreadsheet: edit in Excel or import into Google Sheets. Keep completed copies private; answers are not uploaded.

✓ Good example

A fictional daypack retailer and fictional trail-map publisher make a useful packing guide with transparent responsibilities.

✗ Common mistake

Buying undisclosed endorsements or exchanging many links solely to manipulate rankings.

You pass when: Your source list, useful pitch, disclosure requirements, follow-up and outcome definitions are documented—not guaranteed coverage.
