Lesson 11 of 12 · Module 11 · Connect outcomes
Measure discovery, search and revenue
What it is
Separate discovery (mentions/citations), traffic (detectable referrals/branded search) and business (orders/revenue/margin/returns). No single metric proves AI caused a sale. 1. Define KPI source, date range, denominator and owner. Specify whether revenue includes refunds, tax, shipping and discounts. 2. Review GA4 and Shopify source/medium reports when configured. Some assistant journeys appear as direct or later branded search; do not label all direct traffic AI. 3. Ask a neutral optional “Where did you first hear about us?” Include AI, search, social, friends, other and unsure; allow nuance about multiple touchpoints. 4. Survey placement depends on plan/app support. Apps in information, shipping and payment checkout steps are Plus-only. Verify other placements; an optional post-purchase form/email may be simpler. Third-party apps may charge. 5. Minimize personal data and explain use. Report question, method, count and response rate if known. Recall/response bias remain. 18 of 220 respondents selecting AI is not proof AI caused 18 sales. 6. Annotate ads, promotions, press, offline events and seasons. Search Console may omit anonymized queries; query rows need not equal totals. 7. Report consistent SEO and commercial metrics, unknowns and three next actions. Never invent missing revenue or mix estimates with actual sales.
Why it matters
Helpful resources • Free external: Search Console, Google Analytics and a suitable privacy-conscious form. Tools need setup/access. Shopify reporting is part of a store subscription—not a free Shopify store. • Internal: SEO Progress, Client Reports for saved SEO data. Sign-in/client access required; report creation may cost confirmed credits. They do not automatically import Shopify revenue, GA4 orders or survey responses. • Sources: Checkout app availability, Search Console performance.

PDF: print and write by hand. Spreadsheet: edit in Excel or import into Google Sheets. Keep completed copies private; answers are not uploaded.
✓ Good example
A fictional report gives survey counts, method and other touchpoints, not a claim that each AI response caused an order.
✗ Common mistake
Attributing all direct traffic to AI, promising Plus-only features on every plan or fabricating missing sales.
You pass when: You have a KPI dictionary, referral review, neutral survey plan, annotations and reporting template with gaps and next actions.
