Lesson 2 of 7 · Errors

Have a helpful 'Page not found' page

What it is

When an address doesn't exist, the server should answer with a real 404 status and show a friendly page with links to your main services and contact details.

Why it matters

A helpful 404 keeps a lost visitor on your site. A real 404 status also tells Google to drop dead pages instead of treating them as thin content.

✓ Good example

A 404 page with search, top services and the phone number.

✗ Common mistake

Missing pages show a blank screen, or show 'not found' while telling Google everything is fine (a 'soft 404').

You pass when: Fake addresses return a 404 status and a useful page.
