Lesson 4 of 6 · Backlinks
Link out when it helps the reader
What it is
Linking to useful outside sources (manufacturer specs, rebate programs, code rules) is fine. Old advice to 'only link to sites that link back' is outdated and link swaps can be seen as manipulation.
Why it matters
Helpful outbound links build trust with readers; reciprocal link schemes risk penalties.
✓ Good example
Linking to the state's energy rebate page from your heat pump page.
✗ Common mistake
A 'partners' page of 100 swapped links.
You pass when: Outbound links exist only where they help the reader.
