Lesson 2 of 3 · NAP consistency
Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere
What it is
NAP stands for name, address and phone number. Search engines and AI assistants cross-check these details across your website, Google Business Profile and every directory listing to decide whether they all describe one real business. Small differences, like "St" versus "Street" or an old tracking number, weaken that confirmation. 1. Decide on one canonical version of your name, address and phone. Use the version on your Google Business Profile as the reference. 2. Put that exact version on your website contact page and footer, marked up with LocalBusiness structured data if you can. 3. Search your business name, phone number and address separately to find every existing listing. 4. Claim and correct each listing so the details match character for character: same punctuation, same suite format, same local phone number. 5. Start with your local chamber of commerce, then relevant directories such as toptenohio.com, discoveramish.com, yourstark.com, USA-mfg.net and ohiomanufacturers.com where they fit your trade and area. 6. Keep a simple spreadsheet of every listing and its login, and update all of them the same week anything changes.
Why it matters
Matching NAP details let Google, Bing and AI assistants merge your listings into one confident entity. That means your reviews, photos and mentions all count toward one business instead of being split across near-duplicates. Consistent citations are also one of the clearest trust signals when an AI assistant decides which local business to name in an answer.
✓ Good example
Fictional Maple Leaf Plumbing & Heating uses "Maple Leaf Plumbing & Heating, 1234 Market Ave N, Canton, OH 44702, (330) 555-0148" on its website, Google profile, chamber listing and every directory, with identical punctuation everywhere.
✗ Common mistake
Using a call-tracking number on some listings and the real number on others, abbreviating the address differently per site, or letting an old listing keep a previous address after a move.
You pass when: Every listing you can find shows the identical name, address and phone as your Google Business Profile, and you have a record of where they all are.
