Lesson 4 of 28 · AI guidance files
Publish an llms.txt file
What it is
llms.txt is a short plain-text file at yourbusiness.com/llms.txt. It summarises who you are and links to your most important pages, written for AI rather than people.
Why it matters
It's a shortcut: instead of guessing from menus and footers, AI tools get a clean list of your services, areas and contact pages.
✓ Good example
'# Smith Plumbing' · '> 24/7 plumbers serving Springfield, IL' · links to Emergency plumbing, Water heaters, Service areas, Book online.
✗ Common mistake
No file, or one that just lists every blog post and tag page.
Try it: build a mini llms.txt
# Smith Plumbing > 24/7 plumbers serving Springfield, IL. ## Main pages - [Emergency plumbing](https://example.com/emergency): on-site in 60 min - [Book online](https://example.com/book)
You pass when: yourbusiness.com/llms.txt lists your main service, area and contact pages.
