Local Keyword Research: City Searches Are Not National Demand

Choose useful service searches, inspect the area behind the metrics and save a consistent tracking baseline.

A keyword can fit a local business even when its displayed volume covers the whole country. The wording describes a service; the metric describes demand in a particular area. Check both before deciding what to write or track.

Begin with real services

List actual services, customer language and coverage. Remove services the business does not offer before comparing volume. For fictional Maple Leaf Plumbing & Heating in Canton, plumbing and heating terms belong in different service groups. Qualify saved keywords consistently with the city.

Inspect volume area and source

Local-SEO.com research labels the volume area and source. City research can fall back to state or US data when city evidence is unavailable. A fallback is context, not a city measurement.

Missing volume means unknown. Zero reported volume can still leave uncertainty around sparse local searches. Difficulty is separate; do not assume easy rankings because volume is missing.

Read intent before choosing a page

Service requests, cost questions and how-to questions need different answers. Service pages explain the offer, coverage and next step. Articles answer useful questions and link to appropriate pages. Do not create a separate page for every synonym.

Check what appears for the search today. If results answer a different question, revisit the page match rather than forcing a keyword into its title.

Use this worksheet

For each candidate, record:

  1. Actual service and customer need.
  2. The keyword as it will be searched.
  3. Target city or relevant coverage.
  4. Metric area, source and fallback.
  5. The page that should answer the query.
  6. Search surface and device for tracking.

This avoids confusing a national estimate with local ranking evidence.

Keep comparisons consistent

Save keyword, location and device. For grids also record center, size and radius. Changing them creates a different observation, not automatically a gain or loss. Review actual enquiries separately: rankings and estimates are not customer or revenue totals.

Try the free keyword finder, then local keyword research for paid metrics and saving to a client. Monthly plans provide shared credits for research, checks and reports. Confirm costs before paid work and choose a routine that fits your budget.

Keep checking with a monthly plan

One shared credit balance for rankings, Geo-Grids, AI checks and reports. Paid actions show their cost first. Recurring checks use the per-run credit cap you approve; saved results are free to read.

A free account is a trial, not a monthly subscription. Plan prices and tool costs are shown on the pricing page.
