Why Your Google Ranking Changes Across Town
One search point cannot describe visibility across a service area. Compare locations without confusing search surfaces.

Search for the same service from two parts of a town and results can differ. That does not automatically mean a business lost its ranking. The searcher moved, and location matters to local results.
Name the search surface
Organic Google results rank pages. The local pack shows listings in search results. Google Maps is another listing search surface. First on one does not mean first on all three.
The free local rank checker checks organic website positions from a chosen city, not Maps listing positions. For Maps coverage at several points, use a Geo-Grid.
Distance matters
Local results consider relevance, distance and prominence. A business can face different competitors across town. Completing a profile does not erase geography; listing service areas does not guarantee visibility throughout them.
For fictional Maple Leaf Plumbing & Heating in Canton, Ohio, the useful question is whether it appears where potential customers search for the service, not just beside its address.
Choose useful grid settings
A grid checks multiple points around a center. Record keyword, center, size, radius and date. A wider radius may include places the business does not serve. More points are not automatically more useful; review the cost before running a scan.
Compare like with like
Repeat the same keyword and settings to inspect change. A moved center or expanded radius measures different coverage. Unavailable points are not low rankings: if a search failed, it cannot prove the listing disappeared.
Act on evidence, not a ranking promise
Verify categories and services, clarify website information and correct inconsistent NAP. Consider relevant directory listings, beginning with the local chamber. Request genuine reviews without incentives or selecting only happy customers.
Photos and posts help people evaluate a business, but publishing more posts is not a guaranteed ranking fix. Distance remains outside your direct control.
Use the location exercise below, then explore ongoing rank tracking and monthly plans for a dated record rather than one screenshot.

Distance can favour a nearby listing, but relevance and prominence still matter. A result here does not establish coverage across town.
